DOMANO (Donor Management Online)
Haemorrhage accounts for up to a third of maternal deaths; safe blood is too often unavailable. As the letter of support from the CEO of one partner, the National Blood Service of Zimbabwe (NBSZ), notes: "As 40% of all blood supplies are given to mothers, shortage of blood seriously contributes to maternal mortality."
Recruitment and management of blood donors is complex. "Plugged-in" to the global network of blood organizations, GBF is aware of significant demand for computer-based tools to replace paper-based systems and help low income countries recruit and better manage their donors to secure more and safer donations. GBF has partnered with a developer to make appropriate adaptations to an established software product and offer it on free license to developing countries. This cloud based solution will be used as an electronic database and donor relationship management tool, filling the gap left between those very few countries using expensive, technologically sophisticated approaches and "the rest" left struggling to manage tens of thousands of donors through index cards. Enabling more efficient and effective use of a key health resource, NBSZ estimates that DOMANO will double the numbers of their safest and most reliable donors over the period of the pilot. The impact of this on lives saved can be readily tracked and reported.
Following a successful pilot it is envisaged that DOMANO can rapidly be made available at low cost to any blood organization where it would add value. Its potential impact is both transformational and global.
