The ReMiND Project - Reducing Maternal and Newborn Deaths

Catholic Relief Services
Organization Location:
Baltimore, MD, USA

In a non-traditional partnership between non-profit and private sector, Catholic Relief Services is joining with technology innovator Dimagi and training leader Hesperian Foundation to improve maternal well-being and reduce newborn death by up to 50% in Uttar Pradesh, India. The ReMiND Project will accelerate the delivery of proven interventions within the first 48 hours of life through a novel combination of technology, training, and services for health workers and parents, including:

  • Phone-based job aids for government community health workers and midwives;
  • Real-time data tracking and SMS reminders to health workers to conduct home visits in the first 24 hours after birth with alerts to supervisors for missed visits;
  • Mobile phone birth announcements and health messages for fathers to generate demand for services and encourage healthy practices.

According to WHO, home-based care visits by health workers in the first days of life can prevent 30-60% of newborn deaths. Two-thirds of babies in Uttar Pradesh do not receive health check-ups in their first day of life. ReMiND will develop and demonstrate a scalable new approach for delivering these interventions within the critical first days of life, testing the innovation’s impact on service delivery, demand creation and maternal and newborn survival.

The government supports plans to test ReMiND in Kaushambi District of Uttar Pradesh. Building on the Ministry of Health’s ASHA training content and national commitment to reducing maternal and newborn deaths, if successful, ReMiND has the potential to be integrated into health services across Uttar Pradesh and India.
